A cozy library nook features a circular wooden arch with a gray cushioned seat inside, surrounded by bookshelves filled with colorful books. A round window provides a view of the outside garden.

The Challenge

Libraries serve as crucial community hubs and there was a need to expand and modernise the local library in collaboration with the City of Monash. The goal was to create a space that could foster learning, connection and creativity, all while the library remained operational, posing significant challenges in terms of public safety and project management.

Our Solution

Black Sheep worked closely with the City of Monash to nearly double the size of the library, focusing on creating a contemporary and welcoming environment. The upgrade included installing recycled timber cladding, an after-hours book return chute, a modern e-café with a kitchenette, creative reading nooks, an interactive information desk, custom joinery for desks and seating and new flooring and lighting.

The Outcome

The library transformation was completed on time and within budget, despite the operational challenges. The new, expanded library now boasts state-of-the-art facilities and a more inviting atmosphere, greatly enhancing the community’s access to a modern space for learning and creativity. The project successfully balanced safety considerations with efficient project execution, resulting in a vibrant and functional community resource.
